How long will COVID-19 live on surfaces? New study suggests days, in some cases

(WKBN) – A new study found that COVID-19 can live on some surfaces for up to three days.
The study published by the New England Journal of Medicine examined the stability of the coronavirus strain on various materials, such as plastic, stainless steel and cardboard.

The study found that COVID-19 was more stable on plastic and stainless steel than on copper and cardboard. A viable virus was detected on those surfaces for up to 72 hours after application,
The virus was only viable for four hours on copper and for 24 hours on cardboard.

What we know about Copper and COVID-19.

First and very importantly, it would be very irresponsible of us to say that what we are going to talk about cure COVID-19, understand that this is a new virus that the biggest problem as we don’t know how to cure and that specialists are testing to know how first control and then eradicate COVID-19.

Since this is clear, now if we talk about what is known in the United States.
The United States Government on page https://www.medrxiv.org/has issued an article dated 3/13/2020, explaining the duration of the virus in common contact areas, explaining how long COVID-19 may be present.

The article states that in materials such as stainless steel and plastic COVID-19 after 72 hours the virus was no longer present, in copper at 4 hours the COVID-19 was no longer present, and on cardboard the result was 24 hours.
Of all these materials that have been analyzed, copper is the material that allows the virus to have less permanence.

Light Switch with Plate Antimicrobial Copper

If we make a comparison between stainless steel, plastic (daily common materials) and copper, we find that Copper is the most effective material, since COVID-19 is only housed for 4 hours and the other materials for 72 hours.

So how copper could help now and in the future?

If we talk about that in a public place that is open daily for 8 hours (Restaurant, library, Supermarket, etc.) 5 people enter every hour and the door handle has been infected with COVID-19, we will have as a result that in the stainless steel there has been transmission of about 120 people, in the same equation, but now with a handle with copper, the transmission may have been 20 people.

Toilet Seat and Toilet Handle Antimicrobial Copper

It has also been proven and there are EPA records that copper kills 99.9% of bacteria in its first 2 hours of exposure.

The bottom line is that transmission can be much smaller when daily contact surfaces are copper.

Let’s talk about our formula.

Our formula consists of 80% copper and 20% resins and can be applied on any rigid surface. The application is completely made in cold and does not require heat to be applied.
After applying, pressure sand is used on the surface to expose copper and that as much copper as possible is found on the surface. Also after doing this, our parts are submerged in Patinas and we expect the copper to change color (Note: These skates do not react to plastics or stainless steel.), if there is a reaction this indicates that we have copper on the surface and that the resins are below the copper and that they act only as glue.

The bottom line is that copper is a material that could help make transmission much smaller by changing or covering objects in public places. Like the door handles, handrails, toilet seats, handles.

We offer copper metal coatings to apply in surfaces that can get contaminated with COVID-19 and by changing this to copper we think that we can help by reducing the spread of this virus.

I hope this has been informative and remember that COVID-19 is a new virus and we are not sure how to combat it. Information and prevention are very important.

In this page we want to inform you about COPPER and the properties that this mineral have. Metal Coat Tile and Signs can make difference by coating surfaces that you touch daily, imagine that! We can leave in a better world!
History
Ancient civilizations used copper compounds for the treatment of diseases and for hygiene purposes.

Start the use of copper as a fungicide agent in agriculture.
XIX CENTURY,
After an experiment by the French scientist Millardet, he began to develop different methods for disease prevention in plants.
70s AND 80s, After an experiment by the French scientist Millardet, he began to develop different methods for disease prevention in plants. In 1983, a study conducted at a hospital in Pennsylvania, USA, showed that microorganisms survived on stainless steel.
Present
The antimicrobial uses of copper have expanded to: Antimicrobial Medicines, Oral Hygiene Products, Medical Hygiene Devices, Antiseptics, Kitchen Cleaning Items, Antimicrobial Textiles anti-fouling paints.

Using Copper to Prevent the Spread of Respiratory Viruses
“Human coronavirus, which also has ancestral links with bat-like viruses responsible for SARS and MERS, was found to be permanently and rapidly deactivated upon contact with copper. What’s more, the viral genome and structure of the viral particles were destroyed, so nothing remained that could pass on an infection. With the lack of antiviral treatments, copper offers ameasure that can help reduce the risk of these infections spreading.”

Using copper to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses
Copper can effectively help to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, which are linked to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), new research shows. Animal coronaviruses that ‘host jump’ to humans, such as SARS and MERS, result in severe infections with high mortality. Researchers found that a closely-related human coronavirus – 229E – can remain infectious on common surface materials for several days, but is rapidly destroyed on copper.
Human Coronavirus 229E Remains Infectious on Common Touch Surface Materials
We have shown previously that noroviruses are destroyed on copper alloy surfaces. In this new study, human coronavirus 229E was rapidly inactivated on a range of copper alloys (within a few minutes for simulated fingertip contamination) and Cu/Zn brasses were very effective at lower copper concentration. Exposure to copper destroyed the viral genomes and irreversibly affected virus morphology, including disintegration of envelope and dispersal of surface spikes. Cu(I) and Cu(II) moieties were responsible for the inactivation, which was enhanced by reactive oxygen species generation on alloy surfaces, resulting in even faster inactivation than was seen with nonenveloped viruses on copper. Consequently, copper alloy surfaces could be employed in communal areas and at any mass gatherings to help reduce transmission of respiratory viruses from contaminated surfaces and protect the public health.

OUR FORMULA

Metal Coat Tile and Signs uses a proprietary blend of composite metal 80% and binder 20% that is cold-sprayed onto virtually any substrate to create the look and feel of solid cast metal. The metalcoating has a living finish and will age naturally over time.

The metal is applied as part of a proprietary seven-step process. At an average 7 to 10-mil thickness (plating is less than 1-mil thick) our metal coating adds less than four ounces of weight per square foot, provides the durability of solid cast metal, and is non-corrosive and nonconductive of electricity. Our metalcoating has a Class 1-Class A fire rating.

Metal Coat Tile and Signs uses a proprietary blend of urethane for our substrate and once metalcoated may be used for interior and exterior applications, and will withstand freeze/thaw conditions. All products can be easily cut or mitered using a wet or dry saw and the metal will not chip, flake or peel. Field tile or tile with low relief may also be used for floor application. Tile may be used in a shower or pool area, as a backsplash, on a range hood and around a cooktop or fireplace. (See installation instructions regarding heat source). For all installation information please refer to the Installation page in our catalog or on our website.
